About Dr. Riles


Thomas S. Riles, MD is the George David Stewart Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Surgery at NYU Hospitals Center and Bellevue Hospital Center.

Dr. Riles is a pioneer in treatment for stroke prevention and aneurysm repair. He has helped build the Medical Center's reputation as a leader in the treatment of vascular disease. He was one of the principal investigators in an international clinical trial that explored the use of endografts in treating abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Dr. Riles joined the faculty of the School of Medicine in 1977 and became Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery in 1991. In 1998, he was named Senior Vice President, Clinical Affairs, in the Office of the President of Mount Sinai NYU Health. He became Departmental Chairman in 2001.

In 2002 to 2003, he was President of The American Association of Vascular Surgery, a national organization of nearly 2000 vascular surgeons.

Dr. Riles is the author of over 200 articles and chapters on the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. He is considered one of the world's experts on the treatment of carotid artery disease for the prevention of stroke. He is frequently invited to lecture at national and international forums on stroke prevention and related topics.
